Types Of Cavities

Know more about the types of cavities

Tooth decay is the most common cause of tooth damage. But do you know there are different types of tooth cavities? Before we understand the various types. Let us briefly understand the three layers of the teeth. The outermost layer is called enamel. The innermost layer is called the pulp, which contains the blood vessels and nerves. The layer between these two is called the dentin. In the information provided below, we have briefly explained the various types and their treatment options – brought to you by Smayate Dental Clinic Delhi.

Types of Cavities

Based on severity

Initial caries

When the damage does not involve the pulp, it is an initial stage of tooth cavity. The treatment option here is dental fillings.

Advanced caries

When the pulp gets involved, we have immense pain. Then, root canal treatment is the option for advanced cases.

Based on location

Pit and fissure

The biting surface of the teeth has deep pits and fissures. When food gets stuck in these, pit and fissure caries can occur. This is a preventable type of cavity. In children with deep pits and fissures, we can use pit and fissure sealants, which act as a barrier to make cleaning easier.

Smooth surface

This type of cavity occurs on the smooth side of the teeth. Radiologically, understanding the depth of damage is essential for the best treatment.

Interproximal caries

The area between the teeth accounts for approximately one-third of the total area to be cleaned. Regular flossing is suggested to clean the interproximal area. If not cleaned properly, there are chances of food accumulation and bacterial growth.

Root surface

The root portion of the tooth is rarely affected by caries. This type of cavity is common with gums recession. The receding gums lead to overexposure of the root portion. This can increase the susceptibility to caries attack.

Recurrent

This is the type of cavity that happens in the already-treated tooth. Once the filling is done, it does not mean that you can not get caries in that tooth. Regular brushing and flossing are essential to maintain the good health of the treated tooth.

Treatment options as per the Types of cavities

The treatment plan is different for every stage and variety of tooth cavities. We must understand that we need a customized solution for the problem. Various treatment options are available, such as dental fillings and root canal treatment. Dental fillings are used when the tooth damage is not severe enough to involve the tooth’s nerves. Once the nerves and vessels are affected, we need root canal treatment. Tooth extraction is always the last resort. We at Smayate Dental Clinic Delhi always aim to save the tooth. If the measures taken to save teeth are not feasible, then tooth removal is suggested.

The bottom line – types of cavities

There are different varieties of tooth cavities. It is essential to understand the stage of your tooth damage. All the cavities are different and need special attention regarding treatment. If you notice any early signs of tooth decay, it should be clinically evaluated first. Do not ignore the early signs to prevent further complications.
