Tooth Sensitivity Treatment

When your teeth are sensitive, everyday activities like brushing, eating, drinking causes temporary pain which is often very irritating and annoying for the patient. Sensitivity most often is caused by wear of the enamel or due to bone loss which exposes the root of the tooth.
Sometimes tooth sensitivity is caused by a cavity, fracture of the tooth, whitening or deep fillings. The best way of treating sensitivity is to visit the dentist who would identify the underlying cause. Depending on the cause the treatment for sensitivity can be different for each patient.

  • Tooth paste for sensitive teeth: Regular use of this tooth paste helps block pain in the tooth. This is helpful in cases in which wearing off the enamel is the prime cause of sensitivity.
  • Fluoride: Fluoride application to the sensitive area of the tooth reduces the pain by closing the pores in the dentine and strengthening the enamel.
  • Desensitizing: Exposed dentine can be treated by application of the bonding resin to the dentine of the root or to the dentine in the crown portion of the tooth.
  • Root canal treatment: Severe sensitivity can be treated by doing a root canal treatment of the offending tooth. Here the pulp (a combination of nerve and blood supply) of the tooth is removed and a root canal filling replaces the pulp. After root canal treatment sensitivity in that tooth disappears.
  • Surgical soft tissue graft: If the root of the tooth is exposed due to recession of the gum, then gum from another part of the mouth is used to cover the exposed area. This procedure is gum or gingival grafting. Home care is necessary for maintenance of the mouth. Brushing twice a day with a soft bristled tooth brush along with a tooth paste for sensitive teeth is necessary. Flossing daily is absolutely essential. Brushing technique should be gentle and brushing should be done for 2-3 minutes each time.
Generalised wear of enamel causes the yellow dentine to show in the mouth. Exposed dentin is porous hence carries the hot, cold, pressure stimuli to the nerve of the tooth resulting in sensitivity. This sensitivity is happens in cycles ie there are times when sensitivity is negligible, and at other times it is really very bad.
