Tooth Extraction and Tumor Surgeries

Tooth extraction is most definitely a last resort.

However, there are some cases where a tooth cannot be saved, or to do so would incur a great deal of expense for short-term gain. Removing the tooth itself takes relatively little time and is not painful.

The only thing you will feel is a bit of pressure, and a local anesthetic is usually sufficient for most people.Impacted wisdom molars are teeth which do not have space to erupt inside the mouth. The removal of such teeth need expertise and might lead to swelling of the face in some cases which reverses in 2 -4 days.

At Smayate dental clinic we also do tumor surgeries where non- cancerous tumors are removed from the mouth surgically.

How to prepare for the wisdom molar extraction?

    • Ensure that you have had all the medication prescribed for the dentist.
    • Have a good night’s sleep and take a low dose of anti-anxiety medication in case of stress.
    • Do not skip a meal on the day of the surgery.
    • Wear comfortable clothes on the day of the surgery.
    • Do not wear any makeup as we would need to scrub the area around the mouth.
Lastly switch off your mobile while the surgery is happening

How is the wisdom molar extraction done?

  • The surgery takes 45 min -1hr and is done under local Anaesthesia.
  • The tooth is mostly sectioned and removed in parts.
  • Once the complete tooth is removed the area is stitched. These stitches are removed after 7-10 days.

  • Anaesthesia will wear off in about 1 hour so avoid eating during this period. However, you could drink anything cold while the anaesthesia effect is still there.
  • Avoid hot drinks and food for 24 hours after the surgery.
  • Avoid using a straw and fizzy drinks.
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised with a pillow.
  • Mild soreness, swelling & discomfort might be present for 48 hours.
  • It is normal to have a slight blood ooze for the first 24 hours.
  • Hot fomentation should be avoided.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 4 days.

Complications of Extraction

Complications of extractions are very rare however the patient may experience the following:

  • Numbness and tingling of the lips, chin gums, cheek, teeth and/or tongue(especially from removal of lower teeth)which may persist for several weeks or months
  • Temporary or permanent paraesthesia to lower lip. This means that lip may remain numb even after the procedure.
  • Postoperative bleeding is a normal consequence of this procedure, however there are occasional instances that a patient’s blood does not clot normally. In this case, additional care by the dentist or a physician may be necessary.
  • All the instruments and equipment used in our office are sterilized and made of stainless steel.
  • Adjacent teeth can be affected by oral surgery procedures. For example a tooth with decay can break or weak crowns can pop off or break and teeth with large fillings can break.
