Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic retention – What are the different types of retainers?

Retention and retainers is an important part of orthodontics. After braces are removed, the mouth is put on orthodontic retainers. The retention phase lasts FOREVER! Teeth tend to change its position as time goes by and by wearing retainers we can preserve our teeth in the same place the orthodontist wanted it to be forever. Most of the time this means wearing a retainer at night only.

Types of Retainers for retention:

1) Hawley retainers
Hawley is the traditional form of orthodontic retention, and is the most common option for the upper teeth.

2) Clear retainer

This is a great option for either the top or bottom teeth. The disadvantage is one could stain the clear plastic and those stains would show.

3) Bonded retention

Bonded retension is very commonly done for the lower teeth. A wire is bonded behind the back of the lower teeth. There is no need to remove this retainer, but orthodontic floss should be used to clean the teeth. The advantage of this retainer is that you do not even realise that you are wearing one.
